Egypt and Security Forces

January 29, 2011

Since the Israeli agreements over a generation ago Egypt turned inward for its  security concerns. There are two forces, the army and internal security forces.

The Army is mostly conscripts and reserves who are loyal and well armed but not the primary force in securing the citizenry. Internal security forces are of course equipped but are they loyal? Mubarak is a former Air Force General and Pilot but can his military resume protect him when the crunch comes?

The Egyptian army has seized control of Tahrir Square in downtown Cairo, Fox News reported on Jan 28th. Can they go further and will the presence of the military not the use of the military be enough.

Otherwise the 50,000 National Guard will be the pointy edge of the spear and their loyalty is not guaranteed.

Mubarak can survive but his career is in the twilight.
