BMD for Europe

August 31, 2009

Pretty soon the Obama team will have to decide on what to do with Ballistic Missile Defense. The choice won’t be based on technology or capabilities of a system, it will come down to where the U S sees Russia and how Russia wants to be seen.

First, the old Russia had nuclear parity, a viable threat to Western Europe and lastly support for any anti American presence around the world.  Except for the nuclear club the rest is over.

Second, does the U S see Russia as marginally stable now before they descend into irrelevance basedon demographic and economic realities?

Russia will fight for the past while the U S will strive to leap frog to a gradual but sure demise for Russia. Can the BMD plan rule out the former and expedite the latter?
