Where’s the Big Tent?

February 26, 2009
The GOP is in the midst of the biggest restructuring of its lifetime.  While we are at it, let’s not forget the “Big Tent”.  If the Republican Party is going to move forward nationally and locally, the Big Tent must be in play.  Our party must open its arms to all Republicans (moderate and conservative), and also embrace all nationalities, creeds and income levels.
The Republican Party must become and remain the party of solutions.  But not just solutions for the country club executives that run the corporations.  We must have solutions for the poor and middle-class, and help everyone retain the hard-earned money that every American worker does so well.
The party, nationally and locally, must also put aside the infighting that has been front and center for the last several years.  We can all play in the sandbox, and we must if we are going to win in 2010, 2012 and beyond.  We all need to understand that primaries are not the best of situations, but they are part of the process.  The real voice is the public, so we better get used to it.   The party must find ways to retain and engaged the candidate who lost in the primary.  That candidate had the courage, integrity and ideas to run under the Republican banner; then they can do the same to help the Republican party grow.
So folks, let’s not forget the idea of a Big Tent, put forth by the legendary Lee Atwater.  He was onto something, so let’s move forward.
